What if $10K Fueled Apple’s Tech Revolution a Decade Ago?

If someone had invested $10,000 in Apple back in August 2016, their investment would now be valued at approximately $126,000, assuming all dividends were reinvested. This remarkable growth, which multiplies the original investment by about 12.6 times over the span of a decade, underscores the company’s impressive long-term performance. A significant portion of these gains can be attributed to the rise in Apple’s share price, which climbed from roughly $27 on a split-adjusted basis in 2016 to around $311 today. Even without considering reinvested dividends, the initial $10,000 investment would have appreciated to nearly $115,000.

Apple’s earnings have seen substantial growth alongside this rise in stock value. The company’s earnings per share have increased to approximately $8.72, which is roughly four times the level they were a decade ago. This growth has been facilitated by Apple’s strategic reduction in its share count through large-scale stock buybacks, effectively boosting earnings per share. Moreover, Apple’s valuation has experienced a notable transformation; the company was valued at about 13 times earnings in 2016, a figure that has now surged to approximately 36 times earnings. This combination of robust earnings and a significantly elevated valuation multiple has been a crucial factor in driving the stock’s gains.

Looking forward, replicating such stellar performance over the next decade may prove challenging for Apple. The current valuation limits the potential for another major expansion in the price-to-earnings ratio, suggesting that future returns will likely hinge more on sustained earnings growth. Opportunities for continued advancement could arise from advancements in artificial intelligence, the introduction of new products, and leveraging Apple’s extensive installed base. However, as the company has grown substantially larger, achieving rapid earnings growth will necessitate substantial increases in both revenue and profits.

This impressive decade-long performance illustrates the potent combination of business growth, strategic share buybacks, and valuation expansion for long-term investors. While Apple’s historical returns have been remarkable, the future trajectory of its stock is expected to depend more heavily on the pace at which the company’s profits can continue to grow.
