In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has executed one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia since the conflict began, according to Russian officials. This attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least six people and sparked a substantial blaze at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a single day, marking what they describe as the highest number recorded in a 24-hour period. However, these figures have not been independently verified.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, with 201 being destroyed. Tragically, one individual lost their life in the area amid these assaults. A particularly severe fire erupted at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, about 25 miles from central Moscow. The facility, covering an expanse of roughly 250,000 square meters, suffered extensive damage and was rendered inoperable, according to Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian authorities have increasingly employed long-range drones to strike Russian military and economic sites far from the frontline, citing facilities linked to Wildberries as targets due to their alleged use in military logistics.
This surge in drone strikes underscores Ukraine’s expanding long-range strike capabilities, while Russia continues to employ drones and missiles to hit Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. In a related development, Russian attacks claimed the lives of at least seven individuals in Ukraine, including casualties in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike in Kyiv resulted in six injuries and ignited fires, notably at a major book market where several businesses reportedly lost their entire inventories.
In a separate incident involving NATO forces, a Spanish fighter jet, participating in a NATO patrol, downed a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, stating that Moscow had launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the preceding week.
As both nations intensify their use of long-range weaponry, the potential for casualties and destruction far from the battlefronts continues to rise, marking a concerning escalation in the ongoing conflict.
