Trump Promises “Lasting Agreement” for All Nile Basin Nations

Donald Trump has promised a “lasting agreement” for all Nile Basin nations if he is allowed to mediate. The former President wrote to Egyptian President El-Sisi, offering to restart negotiations with Ethiopia over the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
Trump’s plan involves a strong commitment from the United States. He pledged to use American influence to monitor and coordinate the deal, ensuring that Ethiopia generates “substantial amounts of electricity” while Egypt receives “predictable water releases.”
The dispute over the dam is a fight for resources. Egypt relies on the Nile for agriculture, industry, and drinking water. Ethiopia sees the dam as a way to lift its population out of poverty. Finding a solution that satisfies both needs has been a diplomatic challenge for years.
Trump has often spoken about the Nile dispute, sometimes simplifying the issues. He has claimed to have “resolved” the conflict, a statement that contradicts the ongoing tensions. However, his recent description of the dam as a “big problem” indicates a continued interest in the region.
This new mediation offer is an attempt to cement his legacy. By securing a binding agreement, Trump hopes to validate his claims of being a master deal-maker. The proposal puts pressure on both Egypt and Ethiopia to reconsider the benefits of U.S. involvement.
