How Ukraine Is Building Alliances Through Drone Defense Expertise

Ukraine is building a new kind of alliance — one based not on geography or ideology but on shared exposure to Iranian drone technology. President Zelenskyy’s announcement that Ukraine will assist US and Middle Eastern partners in countering Shahed drones is the latest expression of a foreign policy that converts battlefield experience into diplomatic capital.
The initiative was driven by demand. Multiple nations, including the United States, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, reached out to Ukraine for help. Zelenskyy confirmed the outreach and ordered that equipment and technical specialists be dispatched in response. He framed the decision as consistent with Ukraine’s approach to international relations: those who support Kyiv’s security will receive Ukraine’s support in return.
Ukraine’s credibility in this field is exceptional. The country has faced more Shahed drone attacks than any other nation — tens of thousands launched by Russia, including a single night in which over 800 were deployed. This experience drove the development of interceptor systems that cost as little as $1,000 and have repeatedly demonstrated their effectiveness under real combat conditions.
The EU’s top diplomat acknowledged Ukraine’s expertise at recent talks between European and Gulf foreign ministers, raising the idea that Ukraine’s experience could serve as a model for regional drone defense. This international recognition underscores how far Ukraine’s capabilities have matured over the course of the war.
Zelenskyy acknowledged that the current situation has complicated the push for peace with Russia. Planned trilateral talks were postponed due to the Iran crisis, and Ukrainian officials warned that Russia may be exploiting global distraction to delay negotiations. Despite these challenges, Zelenskyy pointed to Ukrainian military gains along the frontline as evidence of continued resilience and momentum.
