“Galvanise Support”: British Steel Calls for Unity Amid Tariff Threat

In the face of an escalating tariff threat from the United States, British Steel and the Community trade union are calling to “galvanise support” for the UK’s domestic steel sector. Their push for a national pledge to back UK-made steel comes as the industry braces for the potential expansion of a US list of “derivative” goods that could ensnare a wide range of British products.
The UK is already contending with a 25% US tariff on its steel exports, a lower rate than its EU counterparts but still damaging. The new anxiety is centered on a growing list of manufactured goods containing steel—from machinery to construction materials—that are being targeted by Washington.
This expansionary policy is creating a deeply uncertain environment for all European exporters. A US consultation, ending September 29, is widely expected to lengthen the list of 407 product categories already subject to these duties. This “ad hoc” approach makes it impossible for businesses to plan effectively.
The complexities of compliance are also a major concern. Across Europe, firms are struggling to document the precise metal content of their products to avoid ruinous 200% fines for errors. This has led to costly defensive behaviors, such as intentionally overpaying tariffs.
The call from British Steel and the Community union is a plea for national resilience in a hostile international trade environment. By urging the UK’s industrial sector to rally behind domestic steel, they hope to reinforce the long-term viability of the sector, its workforce, and the critical infrastructure it sustains.
