EasyJet Attacks EU Free Cabin Bag Mandate as Disruptive to Modern Aviation

Budget carrier EasyJet has characterized European Union baggage proposals as potentially disruptive to modern aviation practices that have evolved over decades.
The legislative push to mandate free cabin baggage has gained substantial political momentum. European Parliament approval of expanded passenger rights positions the regulations for potential implementation across all flights involving EU airports and carriers.
EasyJet’s leadership argues that current baggage systems represent industry best practices developed through extensive experience and optimization. The ability to manage cabin baggage through pricing mechanisms has improved boarding efficiency and operational performance significantly.
Mandatory free baggage allowances would force airlines to abandon these proven practices and return to earlier operational models that were demonstrably less efficient. The airline’s chief executive specifically noted that unrestricted cabin luggage was once identified as a primary cause of delays.
Financial considerations also feature prominently in the opposition. Baggage fees and other ancillary charges generate billions in revenue that enable competitive pricing. EasyJet continues managing business challenges including quarterly losses while pursuing growth through route expansion and market development.
