“Treat Adults Like Adults”: OpenAI Clarifies Rules for Mature ChatGPT Users

While rolling out sweeping new protections for teenagers, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made a point to clarify the company’s philosophy for its older users: “Treat adults like adults.” This principle will guide the development of the adult-tier experience on ChatGPT, ensuring that enhanced safety for minors doesn’t lead to an overly sanitized platform for everyone.
This clarification comes as OpenAI institutes a new age-gating system in response to a lawsuit over a teen’s death. The primary focus has been on the new restrictions for minors, but the company is also defining what conversational freedom will look like for its adult user base.
According to Altman, adult users will be able to have “flirtatious talk” with ChatGPT and use the AI as a creative partner for writing fictional stories that depict sensitive topics like suicide. This preserves a space for mature, nuanced, and creative exploration that will be strictly off-limits in the under-18 mode.
However, the “treat adults like adults” principle has its limits. A universal safeguard will remain in place: no user, regardless of age, will be able to ask for or receive instructions on how to kill themselves. This draws a firm ethical line between fictional exploration and real-world harm.
By explicitly stating its policy for adults, OpenAI is trying to reassure its user base that the new safety measures for teens will not infantilize the platform entirely. It’s a balancing act: creating a safe haven for kids while maintaining a space for open, if not unrestricted, dialogue for adults.
