Rubio Faces Partisan Divide as Republicans Praise Venezuela Operation Democrats Condemned

Secretary of State Marco Rubio encountered sharply divergent congressional reactions during Wednesday’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, with Republican lawmakers largely praising President Trump’s military operation to remove Nicolas Maduro while Democratic senators expressed profound skepticism about the intervention’s wisdom and effectiveness.
Republican Senator Jim Risch characterized the mission as exceptionally brief, targeted, and successful, revealing that approximately 200 troops participated in a firefight lasting under 27 minutes. He suggested Venezuela might require sustained American and international oversight to ensure future elections meet democratic standards, framing the operation as the beginning of a longer-term engagement.
Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen challenged whether the operation achieved meaningful change given that Maduro’s former vice president and most regime associates continue controlling governmental institutions. She questioned presidential priorities when American citizens face pressing domestic economic challenges and characterized recent foreign policy as spending more and risking more while achieving diminishing returns.
Rubio defended the intervention as eliminating a major national security threat in the Western Hemisphere, arguing that America is demonstrably safer as a result. He outlined economic frameworks for managing Venezuela’s recovery through Treasury-controlled oil revenue accounts and projected continued improvements over coming months.
The partisan divide extended beyond Venezuela to encompass broader foreign policy concerns including Greenland, NATO tensions, Iran, and China. Republicans generally supported the administration’s assertive approach while Democrats questioned whether aggressive rhetoric and military interventions serve American interests. Rubio sought to reassure allies while defending Trump’s confrontational diplomatic style as producing results.
