In his inaugural address to the United Nations General Assembly, Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco underscored Mexico’s commitment to maintaining national sovereignty while fostering international cooperation. Speaking on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Velasco highlighted Mexico’s ability to collaborate with global partners without compromising its independence, emphasizing a balanced approach to diplomacy.
Velasco outlined Mexico’s social policy initiatives, including efforts to reduce poverty and a reported decline in homicide rates, as integral to achieving lasting peace through social development. He linked these domestic policies to Mexico’s stance on respecting the territorial integrity and self-determination of nations.
On international matters, Velasco reiterated Mexico’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East, affirming Palestine’s right to exist with secure, recognized borders. He also condemned the U.S. embargo on Cuba and pledged Mexico’s continued humanitarian support to the island nation.
During the General Assembly, Velasco engaged in discussions with foreign officials from countries such as Spain, France, Qatar, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Peru, aiming to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Talks with Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares focused on enhancing relations and preparing for the upcoming Ibero-American Summit in Madrid.
Mexico and Peru discussed reopening their embassies following a restoration of diplomatic ties, committing to dialogue and mutual respect as the basis of their renewed relationship. Other meetings addressed economic cooperation, strategic investment, UN reform, trade relations, and efforts to bolster multilateral institutions.
