NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan Expands Community Programs to Address Urgent Local Needs

NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan has launched a series of community-focused initiatives to support the most pressing health and social needs of East Harlem residents. The hospital organized thrift and coat drives, canned food collections, a large community baby shower, and a breast cancer awareness campaign that raised more than $20,000. These efforts reflect Metropolitan’s mission to advance both medical care and the everyday well-being of its patients and neighbors.
Leaders at the hospital emphasized that improving community health requires addressing challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to essential resources. With nearly 30 percent of East Harlem households living below the poverty line, the hospital’s programs aim to provide dignity, comfort, and stability alongside traditional healthcare services.
Among the key initiatives, the October thrift shop and November coat drive provided affordable clothing and free winter wear for families facing economic hardship. A canned food drive helped reduce nutrition gaps affecting many patients. In September, a community baby shower supported 60 high-risk and low-income expectant mothers by providing essential supplies and educational resources to promote healthy pregnancies and newborn care.
The hospital also strengthened cancer awareness through its October campaign, raising funds to expand breast cancer education and early detection efforts in a community with disproportionately high cancer mortality rates. Together, these programs highlight Metropolitan’s commitment to addressing medical and social needs through compassionate, community-rooted care.
