Is Your Lifestyle Sabotaging Your Heart? The Sleep Connection

You watch your diet. You try to exercise. But if you’re consistently neglecting your sleep, your otherwise healthy lifestyle could be undermined. Experts warn that poor sleep can sabotage your cardiovascular health, regardless of your other efforts. It’s the hidden variable that can tip the scales toward heart disease.
One of the most direct forms of sabotage is on your blood pressure. You can eat a low-sodium diet, but if you’re not sleeping enough, your body will miss the crucial “nocturnal dip,” keeping your blood pressure high. This constant pressure can counteract the benefits of a healthy diet, continuing to damage your arteries.
Sleep deprivation also ruins your metabolic health. It increases cravings for unhealthy foods, making it harder to stick to your diet. It also leads to insulin resistance, meaning that even if you’re eating well, your body struggles to process sugar effectively. This can lead to weight gain and increase your risk for diabetes, both of which are bad news for your heart.
Finally, a lack of sleep leaves your heart muscle strained and inflamed. No amount of exercise can fully compensate for a heart that is denied its fundamental recovery time. To create a truly heart-healthy lifestyle, sleep must be treated as a co-equal partner with diet and physical activity. It is the foundation upon which the other habits are built.
