US-Canada trade talks have collapsed, with president Trump announcing their “termination.” the president blamed a “fraudulent” and “fake” ad from Canada.
The ad, paid for by the province of Ontario, used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs. Trump accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and interference.
This decision escalates a trade war that has seen 35% US tariffs imposed on Canadian goods like steel and aluminum. Ontario, a key industrial province, has been badly hit.
The ad itself is now highly controversial. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation stated that the ad “misrepresents” reagan’s comments through “selective audio” and was used without permission.
Canadian pm mark carney, who has been trying to ease tensions, said he would continue to seek dialogue, despite the halt in talks confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio.
