London Set for Fresh Round of US-China Trade Negotiations

A pivotal meeting between US and Chinese delegations is scheduled for Monday in London, as confirmed by President Donald Trump on Friday. These high-stakes trade talks come on the heels of a “very positive” phone call between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, an effort to break the deadlock on tariffs and the global supply of rare earth minerals.
Leading the US team will be Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Trump, through his social media, conveyed strong optimism, predicting that “The meeting should go very well,” signaling a hopeful outlook for progress in the long-standing trade disagreements.
The Chinese foreign ministry disclosed that President Trump initiated the 90-minute discussion with President Xi, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. During their conversation, President Xi reportedly called on Trump to “remove the negative measures” the US has implemented against China, underlining Beijing’s key demands for a resolution.
In a notable turn, President Trump also expressed during the call that “the US loves to have Chinese students coming to study in America,” even as his administration has considered restricting some of their visas. This dual message reflects the delicate balance the US seeks to maintain in its comprehensive relationship with China.
