In a significant geopolitical gambit, US President Donald Trump is planning to host the “C5” leaders of Central Asia on November 6, aiming to directly counter Russian and Chinese influence.
The presidents of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan have confirmed the Washington summit. This move comes as Russia’s war in Ukraine has weakened its standing, prompting a regional scramble for power.
China has been making economic inroads, and the EU has increased its engagement. Now, the Trump administration is signaling it will not be left on the sidelines.
The five nations are strategically located and possess vast mineral wealth, including rare earths. They are also eager to attract investment to build their capacity as an East-West trade hub.
While the White House has not yet officially announced the summit, and three leaders are yet to confirm, the event marks a new, more assertive US policy toward the region.
