Flying with the Flock: 6 Essentials for a Smoother Migration with Kids

When traveling with your family, or your “flock,” a long flight can feel like a challenging migration. The key to a smooth and successful journey is to prepare your nest in the sky. By packing the right essentials, you can ensure your little ones are comfortable, nourished, and happy from departure to arrival. Here are the six must-have items to ensure your flock flies in comfort.
First, ensure your flock is well-fed. Hungry little birds are not happy flyers. Pack a nest egg of their favorite snacks—seeds (sunflower), berries (dried), and crackers—to keep them sustained. A personal water source, like a reusable bottle for each family member, is crucial for staying hydrated throughout your long migration.
Next, provide ample distractions to keep the flock from getting restless. Long flights can make even the calmest bird flap their wings in boredom. Your entertainment kit should include a tablet for watching pre-downloaded “flicks” (with headphones), but also some classic nest-bound activities like coloring books and small puzzles.
Create a cozy nest for rest. The airplane cabin can be a cold and unfamiliar environment. A soft blanket, a small pillow, and a favorite cuddly creature can make your seat feel like home. And because little birds can sometimes be messy, a fresh set of feathers (a change of clothes) is essential for each child.
Be prepared for any ruffled feathers with a small first-aid kit. Minor bumps or scrapes are common, and having bandages and child-friendly remedies on hand keeps the journey calm. Keep your migration papers (passports and tickets) organized in one safe place to ensure a smooth passage. And don’t forget a power source—a portable charger—to keep your flock’s electronic devices chirping.
Book an overnight or “red-eye” flight for long-haul journeys if possible. This schedule aligns more closely with your children’s natural sleep patterns. After the initial excitement, they are much more likely to sleep for a significant portion of the flight, making the journey feel much shorter for everyone.
