Miami G20 Plans Advance Without South African Participation

President Trump’s announcement Friday that South Africa will not be invited to the 2026 G20 Summit in Miami marks a significant diplomatic rupture. The decision is based on allegations about violence and discrimination affecting white minority populations in the African nation.
Trump’s detailed social media statement described what he characterizes as systematic persecution of Afrikaners and other descendants of European colonizers in South Africa. The President’s account included explicit claims about killings and property seizures targeting white farming communities. He accused the South African government of refusing to acknowledge these alleged abuses.
Last weekend’s G20 gathering in Johannesburg attracted significant international participation, with world leaders including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the high-profile event. However, the United States maintained a deliberate absence, with no official delegation present. This boycott represented one of the strongest diplomatic protests the United States has lodged against a G20 host nation.
The diplomatic rift deepened over disputes about the proper transfer of G20 leadership from South Africa to the United States. Trump claimed that South African authorities improperly handled the handover ceremony despite the presence of an American embassy official at the closing event. The South African government countered by explaining that they followed appropriate diplomatic channels, transferring leadership at their foreign ministry given the absence of an official US summit delegation.
President Ramaphosa expressed disappointment with the exclusion while emphasizing his government’s ongoing efforts to maintain positive relations with Washington. The specific allegations Trump raised about persecution and genocide of white farmers have been extensively investigated and consistently discredited by the South African government, white community leaders, and independent observers. These disputed claims nonetheless continue to influence diplomatic discourse and international relations between the two nations.
