“Wilful Threats”: Beijing Blames Washington for Trade War Escalation

In a sharp and direct accusation, Beijing has blamed Washington for the dangerous escalation in trade tensions, labeling President Donald Trump’s threat of 100% tariffs as a “wilful threat” that undermines stable relations. The statement from China’s commerce ministry firmly places the responsibility for the current crisis on the U.S. administration.
According to a ministry spokesperson, “Wilful threats of high tariffs are not the right way to get along with China.” This comment reflects Beijing’s frustration with what it sees as a pattern of unpredictable and aggressive behavior from Washington. The ministry made it clear that China’s hand is being forced and that it will respond in kind if necessary.
The U.S. threat, which Trump linked to China’s new restrictions on rare-earth exports, has already caused significant economic damage. Global markets have been routed, with Wall Street losing an estimated $2 trillion in value amid fears of a full-blown trade war. The Dow Jones saw a steep decline, and futures point to further losses.
China insists its own actions have been defensive and reasonable. It argues that its export controls on strategic minerals are legitimate and fall short of a ban, a necessary step after the U.S. has repeatedly targeted Chinese technology companies with its own restrictions.
By framing the U.S. actions as “wilful threats,” China is positioning itself as the rational actor in this standoff. It claims to be open to dialogue but prepared to defend its interests against what it portrays as American bullying. This narrative further entrenches the two sides, making a quick resolution to the escalating conflict seem increasingly unlikely.
